Natural Environment Research Council

Future Leaders Council Chair and Members

Location: National

Remuneration: £200 to £230 per meeting if eligible

The Natural Environment Research Council (NERC) is the UK’s leading public funder of environmental science, investing £330 million each year in cutting-edge research, postgraduate training and innovation in universities and research centres. We advance the frontier of environmental science by commissioning new research, infrastructure and training that delivers valuable scientific breakthroughs. Our vision to place environmental science at the heart of responsible management of our planet.

As part of our commitment to making sure we benefit from constructive challenge from a wider range of perspectives, and to help us deliver our aim to ensure that NERC becomes more representative of the communities we serve, we are creating a Future Leaders Council (FLC). This will be a new body within the NERC governance structure to broaden the talent pool available to advise us, while, at the same time, allowing the environmental science leaders of the future to gain valuable committee member experience.

We are now seeking to recruit eight diverse Members, including a Chair, to join the new FLC. Candidates are sought from a wide range of backgrounds and experiences, whether that is from an early career researcher perspective, from business including small and medium sized enterprises (SMEs), from groups representing wider society or from other disciplines with a cross over to environmental science. We would also like to see applications for individuals from disadvantaged backgrounds, with unconventional career paths and/ or from groups that are under-represented in the environmental science sector.

You will need to bring  enthusiasm for environmental science, expertise in digital, public engagement, sustainability or diversity and inclusion and a strong desire to become a future board and committee member. You will need to be committed to investing your time to develop the knowledge and experience to achieve this goal but in return you will gain invaluable experience of the way in which a complex research funding organisation operates, and have a chance to contribute to an organisation that wants and needs to hear your voice. To be successful as a Member you will also need to demonstrate analytical skills, an ability to work well with others and a commitment to diversity and inclusion. To be successful as Chair, you will also need to demonstrate analytical skills, an ability to work well with others, excellent group management, leadership and facilitation skills and a commitment to diversity and inclusion.

This is an exciting opportunity and a chance to be part of something new and innovative within the environmental science sector.

If you would like to discuss these opportunities, please email nercfutureleaders@gatenbysanderson.com to arrange a conversation.
