About the role

The Carbon Trust’s Policy and Innovation team provides cutting edge advice to governments, policy-makers, institutions and corporates around the world, helping them to make the transition to a sustainable, low carbon economy. We work primarily with decision makers and implementers in key bodies in the UK and emerging economies to help them tackle their low carbon policy and technology innovation issues. We work with corporates, primarily to help them bring low carbon technologies to market quicker, cheaper and at greater scale.

Due to increasing activity in the future energy system sector, we are recruiting an Associate to support the development of energy system-related business development, project delivery, modelling, analysis and thought leadership. We expect the key focuses to include whole systems thinking, flexibility market development and business model innovation.

The Carbon Trust provides innovative advice to governments and businesses around the world to support the global transition to a low carbon economy. We work closely with decision makers and implementers in key institutions in the UK and across multiple emerging and developing countries on low-carbon finance, programmes, policy and technology.

Main duties and responsibilities:

Project delivery:

• Conduct strategic and analytical tasks across multiple client projects

• Develop and apply frameworks for analysis and problem-solving

• Execute analytical tasks on projects, such as market analysis, regulatory analysis, business and financial analysis, policy analysis and energy system modelling 

• Communicate findings orally and in writing in a clear and impactful manner

• Produce high quality report writing/output generation across multiple large, complex and potentially ambiguous projects

Capability building:

• Conduct analysis using complex energy system-based models and frameworks that can form the basis of multiple client engagements

• Support the Carbon Trust’s growth in the future energy system sector by contributing to thought leadership

Business development:

• Support the development of distinctive new propositions that align with target client and funder needs

• Support the preparation of high quality, winning proposals for large projects and programmes

Key skills we are looking for:

• Leading complex future energy system analysis

• Designing and running complex energy system simulations and models

• Has a strong grasp of current UK electricity policies, market arrangement and regulatory frameworks and how these may evolve

• Understands the major activities in the energy sector focussed on the move to a smarter and flexible energy system 

• Applying a structured problem-solving approach to complex strategic problems

• Leading complex projects to deliver high quality outputs on time and to budget

• Communicating complex ideas clearly to expert and non-expert audiences (written and oral)

• Strong interpersonal skills, with the ability to build and maintain productive relationships and influence decision-making

• Ability to work effectively with colleagues in a team environment

• Ability to think and work independently, taking the initiative and ownership of tasks and applying strong organisational and time management skills

• Proven ability to use MS Excel for complex problem solving and analysis

• Experience in using MS PowerPoint and Word for communication and report writing

Qualifications and experience:


• Masters level degree or equivalent in an engineering or numerate discipline, e.g. economics, finance, statistics

• Three or more years’ relevant experience working in a utility, regulatory or energy economics-related role


• Experience working in energy storage and/or flexibility-related sectors

• Experience and track record working with energy market models, e.g. Plexos or similar

Salary & Benefits 

We offer a competitive salary and a performance based bonus. Our hours are 37.5 per week with 28 days paid holiday plus bank holidays and a generous pension scheme.
