May Walters is a boutique search consultancy specialising in senior positions within the environment and engineering sector.

We have been retained by a client with a rare opportunity, at an interesting point in their development.  A key individual is sought to perform a senior role within the highways / transportation sector, with an organisation at the beginning in the next phase of their growth.  

 

The Client

 

Our client is a rapidly expanding multidisciplinary engineering lead consultancy.  Their performance in growth over the last 10 years has been impressive.

Established from an MBO just over 10 years ago, they employed 8 people working from a single site, today they now employ over 175 staff, operating from 6 UK offices and international offices and during this time they have grown their turnover from £1 million to exceeding over £15 million today.

Our client specialises in creating inspiring places to live and work, by the provision of a variety of engineering and environmental services.  They have developed their business by the targeted acquisition of a number of niche consultancies employing credible skills and secure client relationships and now have stable service lines including civil, structural, geoenvironmental and environmental, delivered from offices from London through to the north of the UK and also in UAE.   They deliver solutions into the residential mixed use, commercial, industrial and transport infrastructure industries.  A recent substantial investment of just under £20 million by an equity partner has enabled the organisation to consider further acquisitions and develop the regions organically.  With a new CEO in place, the business plans for the next phase of growth are being constructed for this currently, which makes this a very exciting time to be in the business.

 

Role


The Birmingham office has more than doubled its turnover within the last few years, experiencing one of the highest growths throughout the group.  Having gained prestigious new offices within the centre of Birmingham, they have established civil, structural and geoenvironmental service lines in addition to a well integrated team in highways design, which leads the UK in this discipline and is one of the best performing business units in the company.  Birmingham and this team will form the focus for much of the available resource for future development.  

The retirement of a Senior Director within the team has lead to the opportunity to add fresh leadership into the team.  It is envisaged that the successful individual would be taking the lead in working with the established client base and helping to develop the relationships by qualifying further projects for the team, overseeing the delivery of projects and making sure the team develop in the right way.

This is a key role in the organisation.  The reporting line will be direct to the Board and it is envisaged that there would be an opportunity to contribute to the business plan to effect the future of the business.  To make sure the right fit of individual is attracted, a very competitive package will be put together, alongside equity.    

 

The Individual


The successful individual will likely have;

 

A track record in delivering highway design solutions and be familiar with relevant sections of DMRB   

Be able to operate at a senior level

Possess relevant qualifications and charterships

Have operated in a team leadership capacity within the consulting industry. 

Relevant contacts within the industry are always of interest, but more emphasis would be placed on getting the right fit of personality and approach.

A desire to progress and enthusiasm in this opportunity is paramount and in this regard, applications are welcomed from less senior individuals who are looking to carve a good profile within the industry.
