About The Sector
Wind power is the conversion of wind energy into a useful form of energy such as using turbines to make electricity. Worldwide there are now thousands of turbines operating and a high proportion of these are grouped together in farms which are either onshore or offshore. Offshore has the benefits of harnessing more frequent and powerful winds than land based installations and have less aesthetic impact but construction costs are considerably higher. Small scale power is the name given to generation systems that produce up to 50kw of electrical power and these are increasingly being used to provide electricity to isolated locations with electricity companies often buying any surplus electricity that is produced.
There will be considerable growth in the number of employment opportunities in the industry over the coming years. RenewableUK has estimated that employment could potentially grow in the UK industry from its current level of approximately 10,000 (i.e. 6,000 large onshore, 3,100 offshore and 800 small scale systems) to 60,000 employees by 2020. Indeed the European Wind Energy Association estimates that 15.1 jobs are created in the EU for every MW of energy that is installed. According to EWEA employment in the EU will more than double from 154,000 in 2007 to almost 330,000 in 2020. Onshore energy will continue to be the largest contributor to employment until 2025 when offshore energy employment will exceed onshore employment. By 2030, more than 375,000 people will be employed in the European sector with 160,000 onshore and 215,000 offshore. Meanwhile the global energy outlook 2006 report outlines three scenarios-conservative, moderate, and advanced for future worldwide development; assuming different rates of investments and capacity expansion. Global employment is projected to grow to as much as 2.1 million in 2030 and 2.8 million in 2050 under the advanced scenario.
